The Panama Council of the Navy League of the United States is perhaps best known for the high quality of its monthly speakers -- and not just on maritime issues either.
We also develop good community relations and support the men and women of the sea services, and their families. To this end the Navy League works closely with the US Navy, Marine Corp. Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and the Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá to provide support for local community relations projects such as cleaning, painting and repairing schools, orphanages, community centers. Our scholarship program for cadets of the UMIP -- the former Escuela Nautica -- is over 20 years old.

Reynald Katz President/ CEO Panama International Merchandise Mart
Join us July 8th as we hear more about a billion dollar project within our midst.
The Panama International Merchandise Mart (PIMM) is the brainchild of Reynald Katz and born out of not wanting to join the long line waiting for space in the Colon Free Zone. Many others are thinking the same thing as Phase One sold out in three months.
Born in France, Mr. Katz has worked in Europe, the Middle East, China and the US. He first came to Panama in the 1970s, but only in 2001 decided to settle here and do business.
Katz showed entrepreneurial flair early on. At 19, he helped develop an anti-cracking nail polish which soon accounted for 80% of market share worldwide. ICI later bought the business for $8 million. He then headed to Italy to manufacture lipsticks for Europe and, increasingly, the Middle East. Seizing the chance to explore virgin territory, he moved to the region and made cosmetics there before moving to the US.
Katz arrived in Miami in the 1980s and set up a company making budget perfumes, selling out to a US manufacturer in 1996. Meanwhile, he had been approached by the US government about using his knowledge to develop shopping malls in China.
Advising the Chinese government, Katz created a model for cosmetic retailing used nationwide and acted as a liaison for US manufacturers. He then returned to the US in 1988, in time for the Internet boom, and developed an online duty-free e-commerce business. After the dotcom crash, Katz came to Panama. His first venture here was a liquor distribution company in the Colon Free Zone serving Latin American markets.

DONATE YOUR “PUNTOS DE ORO” FROM SUPERMERCADO DEL REY TOWARD FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO A NEEDY STUDENT AT PANAMA’S MARITIME ACADEMY
Panama is a maritime nation and badly needs persons trained to be Officers in the Merchant Marine. The Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá (UMIP) helps meet this need and offers Panamanians from modest backgrounds the opportunity to qualify as shipboard officers or for executive positions elsewhere in the Maritime Industry. However, a significant number of students and prospective students at the University need financial assistance to cover the cost of books, equipment and living expenses.
To help meet this need, the Panama Council of the Navy League is coordinating a a Program to convert “Puntos de Oro” from the Supermercado del Rey Chain into Balboas/Dollars to be used for financial assistance to deserving students, You can contribute to this Program by donating as little as 1000 points from your “Puntos de Oro” account. All you have to do is fill in the form, have it witnessed and contact the Navy League office whose address is on the form. NOTE! You do not have to be a member of the Navy League to donate to this worthwhile program.
